Snoring can be a serious social problem. Anyone sleeping in the same space will suffer from sleep deprivation, develop resentment and you will become the butt of jokes and ridicule on account of your snoring.

There are a number of reasons for snoring but the most common among them is due to weak muscles in the tongue, throat or jaw. Add to that nasal problems and soft palate issues and that just about covers the majority of causes for snoring.

So, how does one get past these problems and become a non-snorer? There is a vast array of information and help available. But one of the most effective solutions is to be found here - Click here to find out!

Stop Snoring

Snoring is a universal problem. It can lead to the breakdown of otherwise working relationships. Snoring happens when the free flow of air through the passages of the nose and the back of the mouth are obstructed.

Habitual snorers are extremely noisy and cause severe discomfort to anyone sharing the room with them when they are sleeping. It is estimated that 45% adults snore at some time or other and that 25% snore habitually. Overweight people and males tend to be more prone to problem snoring, and the situation tends to worsen with age.

Those who are prone to snoring normally suffer from:

  • Weak tongue, jaw or throat muscles
  • Bulky throat tissue either due to obesity or in children, due to adenoids or tonsils
  • A long soft palate or uvula
  • Blocked nasal passages.
  • Deformities of the nose like a deviated septum.

While these are the more common causes of snoring, it can also be due to excess consumption of alcohol before sleeping or in some cases due to sleep apnea, a pretty serious condition. It is therefore important to find out exactly why you snore – whether its due to poor muscle tone, infection, bulky tissues, nasal allergy, deformity or sleep apnea, before trying to solve the problem.

There have been devices designed to solve the problem of snoring, devices that try to reposition the lower jaw, or ones that open nasal air passages, to list a couple. But they’re uncomfortable and not really an answer to the problem.

Some suggestions to help reduce the problem of snoring especially for those who are not habitual snorers are:

  • To avoid being overweight and to exercise in order to build good muscle tone
  • Develop regular sleep patterns
  • Sleep with your head tilted at least 4 inches higher than the rest of your body.
  • Sleep on your side
  • Avoid eating heavy or snacking at least 3 hours before retiring and avoid alcohol at least 4 hours before bedtime.
  • Avoid tranquilizers or sedatives and antihistamines before going to sleep.
